Treasure in the Field

The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.

– Matthew 13:44

Bethany House and Garden is an innovative new ministry context, hoping to help others find their way to God through care of creation and connecting with our neighbors. The kingdom of heaven is held in the grounds surrounding Bethany House and as I work in creation with the neighbors around us the treasure of the kingdom is revealed. By seeking God in creation and connecting with my neighbors through sharing one another’s stories, together we find ways to better love our neighbor as ourselves. As the full ministry at Bethany House and Garden is being planned, there is an opportunity to expand our connections with the most marginalized of Topeka, the homeless, in order to listen to them about what ministries would provide them with the greatest benefit.

As the curate for Bethany House and Garden, I hope to hear the hopes and dreams of the homeless in Topeka for ministry by deeply listening to them. I want to lift them up from invisibility to decision making. To do that I need to meet them where they are and create relationships, demonstrating Christ’s love and grace for all creation.

Treasure in the Field will provide opportunities to form a community of prayer, study, and worship. Because of its outdoor setting, Treasure in the Field will provide an experience of the kingdom of heaven through interaction with creation. Through building relationship with the homeless, they will be given a voice in the decisions made regarding the ministry at Bethany House and Garden. Without their input, our ministry will be lessened; with their input, Bethany House and Garden can live more fully into God’s intentions.
